You need to understand how those aspects will affect how the team will work together. The initial period will help determine how team members will work together.

Storming.  Once the team has come together, there will have to be a period of sorting out amongst the team members.  At this point, members will start to challenge each other’s ideas and positions, and this phase will mark a series of conflicts within the team.  It is a necessary part of the team’s development, and will result in clear leadership if you let it run its course. This phase should identify the natural leaders in the group and will produce a hierarchy that allows the whole group to operate at a team level.

  • Norming.  This phase allows teams to normalise – solve problems using either past experiences or as a group effort – and control the problem being given to them.  This is where the natural leadership of members will come to the fore as they bring in the whole team to solve whatever issue has been presented to them.
  • Performing.  With interpersonal traits and group politics resolved in the storming stage, the team is now working at optimum and is in its best condition to be able to solve problems. The hypothesis can be tested by introducing a new and unrelated problem once the team has shaken itself out and watch as the group mechanics work once more to efficiently solve the new issue. Once a team has shaken itself up them different personalities will assume certain roles within the team.

The system will always happen with groups performing team building exercises and they may occur quite rapidly as the team understand each other and react with their own personality traits, but if you let the process take its course, you will end up with a team that works the most efficiently and is best structured to make the necessary decisions and drive them through.
